Frequently Asked Questions
Requirements
To ensure a safe and supportive environment, we require a Security Clearance, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Intervention Check for everyone in the home who is 18 years or older. In addition, all dayhome educators must hold a current Child/Infant CPR First Aid Certificate.
That said, you can still apply to become a dayhome educator before completing your security and intervention checks. However, these documents will need to be submitted prior to your approval process.
Furthermore, it’s considered an asset if you hold your Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Level 3. Even so, we welcome applicants who do not yet have their Level 3. If accepted, you’ll be required to complete your Level 1 course, which can be done conveniently through in-home study.
Lastly, please note that we are not currently approving dayhomes located in apartments.
No, you do not need to have the same equipment in your home, nor is it required that your space resemble a traditional daycare. Instead, your environment should be thoughtfully designed to respond to both your family’s needs and the needs of the children in your care. Ultimately, what matters most is creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging space that supports learning and development.
Yes, however we will require written permission from your landlord.
Ratios
You can have up to six children (aged 12 and under) not including your own children. You can have two children under the age of 2 or three children under the age of 3 (your own children count in this ratio).
Running a Dayhome
When it comes to choosing families, the decision is entirely yours. As an educator, you have the flexibility to set your own hours, and to select the families you work with. Most importantly, we encourage educators to choose families who align with their values and philosophy in child care, ensuring a positive and respectful partnership from the start.
Please note that only one person can be contracted with the agency. However, your friend, husband, sister, daughter, or another trusted individual can apply to become a backup educator for situations when you’re unable to care for the children. In such cases, having a backup ensures continuity of care and peace of mind for families. If you’re interested in this option, feel free to contact the agency for more information on how to apply to become a backup educator.
Pets
Yes, pets can be a wonderful addition to the home! That said, it’s important to ensure their vaccines are up to date. Additionally, items such as the litterbox, food, and water must be kept out of reach of the children to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
Cost
We do not charge a fee to become a dayhome educator with our agency. However, you will be responsible for covering the cost of your criminal background check and First Aid/CPR certification. In addition, there are ongoing expenses associated with running your dayhome—such as setting up your play space and providing food and drinks for the children in your care. Because you’re operating your own business, many of these costs may be tax-deductible, which can help offset your expenses.
Benefits
Whether you’re just starting out or already have an established dayhome, joining our agency comes with many valuable benefits. For example, you’ll gain access to financial incentives such as the government wage top-up and grants available to families. Moreover, being part of a licensed and monitored agency helps attract families who are specifically seeking high-quality, regulated childcare.
Child Development Dayhomes is a well-known dayhome agency that has been in operation for over 30 years. Over the years, we’ve earned numerous awards, including the Minister’s Award of Excellence in Child Development, Director of the Year, and Childcare Consultant of the Year. In addition, we maintain a strong social media presence and offer a private Facebook group exclusively for our Educators, fostering connection and support.
To further enhance parent engagement, our agency uses the StoryPark app to keep families involved in their child’s learning journey. At the heart of our approach, we believe that children are capable leaders in their own learning. As such, our practice is guided by the Alberta Early Learning and Child Care Curriculum Framework, “Flight.”
