Frequently Asked Questions

Requirements to become a dayhome educator in Edmonton and area

To ensure a safe and supportive environment, we require a Security Clearance, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Intervention Check for everyone in the home who is 18 years or older. In addition, all dayhome educators must hold a current Child/Infant CPR First Aid Certificate.

That said, you can still apply to become a dayhome educator before completing your security and intervention checks. However, these documents will need to be submitted prior to your approval process.

Furthermore, it’s considered an asset if you hold an Early Learning and Child Care Diploma (Level 3) and/or experience with the Flight Framework.  Even so, we welcome applicants who do not yet have their Level 3. If accepted, you’ll be required to complete your Level 1 course, which can be done conveniently through in-home study.

Lastly, please note that we are not currently approving dayhomes located in apartments.

2-3 months, depending on how quickly you complete the requirements and schedule your visits with the approval’s consultant.

Dayhomes do not have specific measurements or square footage per child. We examine the flow of the space, ensuring it accommodates 6 children to play comfortably. Every room requires a window that opens for evacuation purposes.

Dayhomes are required to have a window in every room used by the children and a fully enclosed, private outdoor space. Look at the layout of the house, and does it allow for constant supervision of the children in care? When you are preparing meals in the kitchen or assisting children in the washroom, can you supervise the children in the play area? Families often seek bright, open spaces that provide ample room for children to play, move, and explore. Having a separate room for napping is a bonus.

Ratios

You can have up to six children (aged 12 and under) not including your own children. You can have two children under the age of 2, or alternatively, three children under the age of 3. However, in this ratio, your own children are always counted.

Running a Dayhome

When it comes to choosing families, the decision is entirely yours. As an educator, you have the flexibility to set your own hours, and to select the families you work with. Most importantly, we encourage educators to choose families who align with their values and philosophy in child care, ensuring a positive and respectful partnership from the start.

Please note that only one person can be contracted with the agency. However, your friend, husband, sister, daughter, or another trusted individual can apply to become a backup educator for situations when you’re unable to care for the children. In such cases, having a backup ensures continuity of care and peace of mind for families. If you’re interested in this option, feel free to contact the agency for more information on how to apply to become a backup educator.

Yes, however we will require written permission from your landlord.

No, you do not need to have the same equipment in your home, nor is it required that your space resemble a traditional daycare. Instead, your environment should be thoughtfully designed to respond to both your family’s needs and the needs of the children in your care. Ultimately, what matters most is creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging space that supports learning and development.

Pets

Yes, pets can be a wonderful addition to the home! That said, it’s important to ensure their vaccines are up to date. Additionally, items such as the litterbox, food, and water must be kept out of reach of the children to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.

Costs and Income

We do not charge a fee to become a dayhome educator with our agency. However, you will be responsible for covering the cost of your criminal background check and First Aid/CPR certification. In addition, there are ongoing expenses associated with running your dayhome—such as setting up your play space and providing food and drinks for the children in your care. Because you’re operating your own business, many of these costs may be tax-deductible, which can help offset your expenses.
